I never thought I’d say it but I went for my first ever hike. My story is nowhere near as exciting as the movie Wild, but what I can share are a few tips on how to make your first hike a super enjoyable experience.

Waterproof everything is everything, especially when it comes to footwear. This is why I chose to go for a boot that kind of resembled a builder’s safety shoe. Skechers from Shoetique did the job perfectly. Complete with a strong grip, memory insoles for extra comfort and a price tag that’s reasonable, these were a great choice for my first ever hike. Make sure the footwear you go for is light and elevates your walk rather than drags you down. Walking on uneven surfaces can be challenging, so a good grip and lightness of your waterproof boots suddenly are the most important things in the world.

Depending on what time of the year you decide to hike on, you will need to make sure you can warm up or cool down. You also need to consider the sudden changes in temperature – if you are hiking up a hill or mountain or vice versa, going down into caves or lakes – and how these changes may affect your body. For my first hike, I chose a permissive, beginners’ trail, so all I concentrated on was warmth and keeping dry. I went for the Linea Weekend padded waterproof parka via House of Fraser, which kept me nice and toasty throughout my small adventure.

I was lucky enough that the weather was spectacular at the Lake District that Autumn day. To cool down, all I needed to do was simply unzip. This leads me on to the jumper. If it was windier or colder than it was I would had probably gone for a turtleneck, or as any experienced hikers would advise – thermal sweatshirt with a fleece hoodie or cardigan on top. And yet the weather was tremendous, so oversized and cosy was the kind of sweater to be in. Luxemme’s rather trendy and truly Kanye jumper ensured I got a nod from Yeezy while feeling as comfortable as Hugh Hefner in his red robe at the Playboy mansion on a Saturday night. You get it, comfort level: Infinity. Generally, Luxemme’s clothing is very glamorous and daring but they truly nailed comfort with this mustard must-have. I am pretty sure I’d get one in every colour if this Manchester-meets-Parisian-chic brand rolls out more options.

Finally, some generic fitness tips. I knew what day I’d go hiking on, so I hit the gym a good few times before my trip. It helped me to build up my stamina and I just felt generally fitter and could walk for longer. I did HIIT – High Intensity Interval Training. I suggest finding out what fitness routine works for you and giving it a go before you set off hiking. It may be something intensive in the gym or simply getting off the bus earlier and power walking home, these are all breadcrumbs to a healthier you. If you are feeling serious about your hike or you know that the trail you selected is a bit more advanced, I suggest taking tips from the experts at Backpacker.

Being surrounded by such splendid scenery makes all the effort and preparation worth it. I can’t wait to be back to the Lake District and discover new places. Let me know if you did any epic hiking and if you have any extra tips. I think I found a new love where function outshines fashion. It ain’t no fashion week, and the front row is always yours.

  1. How brilliant to see images of the Lake District – and such lovely ones too! I haven’t visited in quite a few years, however I can immediately recognise where you are from the photos, you’ve brought back some really nice memories for me 🙂 You have the most incredible eyes by the way, the close-up portrait shots are breathtakingly beautiful!

  2. Oooh I adore hiking! I recently did it and bought shoes very similar to yours – botinki 🙂 I advice to bring sunglasses, even on cloudy days, because you never know when you’re lucky enough to get some sun 🙂
