While what’s in your CV is majorly important to get the job of your dreams, making a good impression sometimes can lead those who have less skill than you to take your place. Let’s talk about how to prevent that from happening so that you could start focusing on what’s really important: Choosing cool stationary for your new desk as well as your new office mug.

5 Ways to Maximise Your Chances at a Work Interview:

  • Wear a blazer. You don’t have to go for an 80s power blazer, like I did in my photos, but go for a classic black one and a white shirt or blouse. Don’t feel compelled to complete it with a pencil skirt, trousers will do just fine.
  • Heels or no heels? If you are going for an office job, I suggest beautiful and stylish flats. It’s best to be grounded and let your brainwaves do all the elevating at the meeting. Of course, if you are going for an interview to a modelling agency or a casting, throwing a pair of heels into your bag is a must.
  • In terms of colour scheme, I’d advise going for neutral, subdued shades. Always tone down your accessories, and don’t go for items with huge in-your-face logos. You may be remembered for your designer bag, but it’s much more important that the interviewer recalls your intellect, eagerness to hit the ground running and your ideas. Guess what candidate the HR department is going to call back, the one with bag goals or the one with actual goals.
  • When applying makeup before an interview, go for the no-makeup makeup look. This consists of foundation, concealer, mascara, eyebrow pencil/mascara and lip balm. Beautifully presented, yet natural. And of course smiling, always smiling.
  • Prepare at least three ideas that you’d love to start working on provided you get the position. Run the interviewer through them, even if they don’t specifically ask. You will come away from the interview looking like not only have you researched the firm but you will be an active employee from 9am on day one.

Repeat the process on your first day – it’s okay if you look slightly more formal than your colleagues. Step by step, you will inject more of your personality into your work wardrobe and you’ll start having fun with it.

As you climb the career ladder, you might opt for wearing a confident, colourful and punchy power suit. And no one can mess with a lady in one of those. If you are feeling particularly brave, look for style references from the 80s and 90s. This is why I opted for this emerald green Escada blazer and the paisley embroidered Yves Saint Laurent skirt. If you want a bit more office fashion inspiration, I say watch Working Girl, and be amazed at the size of those shoulder pads.

  1. Love how you styled this blazer gorgeous!! It definitely got a 80s vibe, but love that you kept the oversized silhouette low key. Great idea to match it with the skirt and pair it with the yellow shoes. So good and think it would work perfectly for a work interview. Love the idea to do a blazer to an interview too, definitely gives a serious and “real” impression! Xx

  3. That skirt is SO gorgeous and made even more so by that pretty blazer. Loved the little bit of lace under there and those side shots sure prove that amazing curves such as yours can still show up nicely under a blazer. Very sexy!! You are so beautiful and those earrings are cool. Kisses
